I have to say finding this gem by Soul de Marin in my ‘box today really got the weekend started on the right foot. Beautifully pure house music, “Sound of the Vibes” (Phobic Recordings) has all the elements of a great track – simple but effective hook, horns, percussion, filters, fun samples and a jazzy vibe. The Original is my pick followed by the Neil G’s So Simple Dub. Javi Lopez’ remix was just a touch too filtered for me but is still a faithful interpretation of the original.
19 year old Dutch producer Soul de Marin has made quite a name for himself over the past two years as his deep, soulful and jacking house sound has appeared on labels including Guesthouse, Sampled, Lingo, DigiFunk and Adaptation. Along the way he has worked with the likes of Andy Ward, Conan Liquid, D-Reflection and Quell, picking up support from DJs Mark Farina, Jason Hodges, Chuck Daniels, DJ Mes, Frankie J and Brazilian Soul Crew.
Here for Nottingham’s Phobic Recordings he displays more of the trademark sound that has drawn comparisons to to the sound of Joey Youngman. The remixes from Javi Lopez (OneThirty, Sweatleaf, Ospina Digital) and Neil G (S.O.W.A.T., Motion Music) retain the funky jacking feel of the original version.
