Nic Fanciulli is the latest addiotion to the prestigious Balance club — members include Deetron, Nick Warren, Paolo Mojo, and Desyn Masiello, to name a few — and he doesn’t disappoint. Nic comes with quite the pedigree: Jet-setting DJ, chart-topping producer, label boss, host of the Worldwide Sounds web radio show, and a long (and growing) list of awards and achievements, remixes, collabs, and singles.

Disc 1 — my favorite of the pair — features over two dozen blazing cuts, pushing the bounds of tech-house at one extreme to deep and rolling house at the other. The diversity of sounds is a fresh way to approach things nowadays. You’d think it’s common sense, but far too many of the big names seem to be taking the easy way out. Fanciulli is a trailblazer and willing to take chances and it has certainly paid off on this album. It mixes underground sounds with some more recognizable tracks; the flow never stops moving forward, and the unique style grabbed my ear from the begining. There is a genius behind the layering and programming, and the airtight cohesion and energetic execution make this an instant winner.

I rarely listen to DJ mixes more than once anymore, but this one has been in my rotation for the past several weeks and isn’t going anywhere.

Disc 2 changes things up a bit, acting as an outlet to showcase some of the best of Nic’s own Saved Records label and a good contrast to the direction we went in the first hour. The ride is a bit smoother with less of the rough edges and raw vibe, but the journey itself is another magical excursion in an aural wonderland. The tracks are all tweeked and tailored by Mr Fanciulli, many exclusive to this compilation.

The Balance Series always offers up something fresh, and while all of the artists haven’t exactly done it for me, I do applaud the label for giving each individual room to create an album in their own unique vision. Nic Fanciulli’s Balance 021 is one of my favorites in the series, and one of the best things I’ve heard in general for a long while. 8.5/10
